Eleven Eyes
Dedication, talent and cool ideas are three qualities that make Eleven Eyes. Just to see the six-piece on stage together is wondrous enough. But to hear the music flow out of them ... you can't help but to stop, listen and groove.
The quality of the band's music comes from their mutual influences, the common ideas they share and the fact that they all pretty much live and breathe music.
Shortly after Tim McLaughlin assembled the group for his senior trumpet recital at U of O, the band began playing in Eugene jazz clubs.
Now, about a year later, the band is Eleven Eyes and is set to take the stage at the Eugene Folk Festival this May, and to celebrate the release of the band's first CD this June.
Tim McLauglin
McLaughlin is a former OSU student who graduated from U of O last year? with a degree in Music. Besides playing in Eleven Eyes he also plays for a Latin American-Cuban band in Eugene called Son Mela'o, a pop/rock band called The John Shipe Band, and a Bend-based band called the Bond Brothers with Eleven Eyes member Matt Calkins. McLaughlin, Calkins and Eleven Eyes bassist/keyboard player Dave Trenkel were all together earlier in Nautical Sauce Posse. Besides that impressive line-up, McLaughlin also works at the American Music Institute and the Lesson Factory in Eugene. Other than that, he says, "there's not a whole lot else."
Mike Pardew
Guitarist Mike Pardew teaches guitar at Lewis and Clark College in Portland and at the Lesson Factory. He is currently a student at U of O majoring in Music and Spanish Literature. "I like to read a lot," said Pardew. Not only does he play in Eleven Eyes, but also the Cubist Quartet in town, Montage in Eugene, and for pop singer Thierry Renoux.
Steve Weems
Drummer Steve Weems studied Classical Percussion at U of O for four years. He teaches at the Lesson Factory and works for Oregon School Districts. When he's not working or playing music, he's "just sitting on my ass writing music."
Matt Calkins
Calkins is one of the local members of Eleven Eyes. He graduated from OSU in 1998 with a degree in Business, but returned later to study Jazz. Besides playing saxophone, he works at Peak Internet, and said "I drink lots of beer on the weekend."
JD Monroe, who prefers to be called the Turntable Enabler, is a drummer who handles electronics and turntables for Eleven Eyes. He is a cook at Big River, is married and has a two-year-old child. Lately, he has been spending time writing turntable music, but hasn't had much time for the drums.
Dave Trenkel
Trenkel is entrenched in music. He graduated from OSU in 1991 with a degree in Music; he currently runs a label called New and Improv records, he performs electronic music under the name Admiral Twinkle Devil and works part time at Happy Trails. He also designs education software and walks his dog.
Trenkel, Calkins, and the Turntable Enabler also have a band together called Top Dead Center.
"When we're not playing I never go out to see other bands because I just don't have the time," said Trenkel.
All of the members of the band claim several influences. These range from Miles Davis and John Coltrane, to Herbie Hancock and Karl Denson, to DJ Logic and Frank Zappa.
